Ideal ice creams

Ideal ice creams

S. Prabhakar Kamath, the founder of Ideal ice creams started out in business dealing in tailoring material and firecrackers. Seasonal fluctuations in those businesses got him thinking on a more secure line of business that would be in demand throughout the year. So, he decided to start an ice cream parlour in spite of there being fierce competition in the segment.

Setting out to make the best ice cream possible, he taught himself the art of ice cream making and conducted experiments at home, testing his creations on enthusiastic neighbours. Three months later he launched Ideal Ice Cream Parlour on Market Road in Mangalore on May 1, 1975 with14 flavours. The rest is history.

In two short years the ice creams that he manufactured so tantalized the taste buds of Mangaloreans that people were willing to wait in queue just to get a chance to savour the ice cream. With the growing demand, expansion was inevitable. Today Ideal Ice Cream has three parlours in Mangalore city, one of which is the largest ice cream parlour in the country, and a restaurant and ice cream parlour in the Infosys office complex. Ideal Ice Cream is also available through 500 dealers. Its retail network also stretches across coastal Karnataka, Kerala and Goa.

Since the beginning, innovation has been a mainstay of Ideal Ice Cream and the famous Ice cream concoction ‘Gadbad’ bears testimony to this. Ask anyone what Ideal Ice Cream is most famous for and you will get the answer ‘Gadbad’. So popular is this ice cream dessert that it has now become a generic name and imitations of this can be found in almost any ice cream parlour in coastal Karnataka.

Mr. Kamath’s passion for quality has elevated his ice cream brand to an iconic status in coastal Karnataka. A ‘must visit’ place for anyone visiting Mangalore. The Gokarnanatheshwara Temple

The Gokarnanatheshwara Temple

The Gokarnanatheshwara Temple, otherwise known as Kudroli Sri Gokarnanatha Kshetra, is in the Kudroli area of Mangalore in Karnataka, India. It was consecrated by Narayana Guru. It is dedicated to Gokarnanatha, a Hindu deity also known as Shiva. Compared to the other temples in and around Mangalore this temple was built recently. The Billava community was traditionally suppressed by the upper caste treating them as untouchables. Narayana Guru has been regarded as the up lifter of the downtrodden and a visionary social servant.
Learning about the work undertaken by Narayana Guru in establishing social equality through his temples in Kerala , a prominent Billava leader from the community Sahukar Koragappa visited the Guru along with the leaders of the community in 1908. The delegation appraised Narayana Guru about the problems faced by the Billav’s.
Narayana Guru visited Mangalore on invitation from this delegation and ascertained for himself the exactness of the prevailing situation. After visiting, Narayana Guru selected the place in Kudroli and advised the community elders about a suitable location to build their temple; work began under his direction. Elders such as Sahukar Koragappa, B.R.Karkera took the initiative in ensuring smooth progress in the temple's construction.
Narayana Guru formally consecrated the temple in February 1912 with the establishment of sacred Shiva Linga, which was brought by him. He named this place as Gokarnanatha Kshethra. Narayana Guru advocated that all God's creation had the right to worship the Almighty and preached that people irrespective of the caste, creed or religion must worship one divine force, known by different names.
The temple was renovated in 1989 under the leadership of B. Janardhan Poojary and under the guidance of Somasunderam, son of Koragappa. Sthapadi K. Dakshinamoorthy was the architect who designed and built the present temple in the Cholas style of architecture from its original Kerala style. The new gopuram is 60 feet in height and very beautiful. The renovated Gokarnanatha Kshethra was inaugurated by the prime minister of India
Some of the festivals are celebrated in this temple Maha shivaratra , Navarat ,Ganesh chathurti , Deepavali etc. In addition to this idols of Sharada Matha ,Maha Ganapati , idols of nava durga’s are worshipped in the premises during Dasara. The dasara festival is celebrated with much grandeur. The dasara celebrations of this temple is popularly called Mangalore Dasara.

St. Aloysius Chapel

The St. Aloysius Chapel in Mangalore was built by Jesuit Missionaries in 1880 and its interiors painted by the Italian Jesuit Antonio Moscheni in 1899, during the Mangalore Mission in 1878. The Italian Jesuit played an important role in education, health, and social welfare of the Mangalorean Catholic community and built the St. Aloysius College in 1880, St Aloysius Chapel in 1884 and many other institutions and churches.
St. Aloysius College Chapel is an architectural marvel that could stand comparison with the chapels of Rome. What makes this chapel unique compared to the other chapels in the country is the beautiful paintings that cover virtually every inch of the walls.
Antonio. Moscheni from Italy is the creator of this master piece. He took almost two years to complete his painting. One portion of the chapel paintings depicts the life of Aloysius Gonzaga to whom Aloysius College and chapel are dedicated. Saint Aloysius gave his life in the service of others. He is given as a model to the students of the college. Gonzaga had everything that a young man of his age desires - wealth, power and influence, but he gave them up in order to serve others, especially the most needy.

There are two types of paintings in the Chapel: fresco and canvas. A fresco is painted on fresh wet lime plaster walls. The colours get embedded in the lime plaster as it dries up. Frescos cover about 600 square metres of the walls of the Chapel. For an oil painting, the colours are made by mixing pigments with linseed oil. The canvas is made of pure linen of strong close weave. The paintings on the ceilings in the Chapel (about 400 Square Metres) are in oil on canvas. The paintings of this chapel is preserved by a recognised board of the nation which maintains and restores all historic artifacts .
